Melton Mowbray Play close Junior Parkrun

Sarah Wilson Communication lead at Birch Wood Special School in Melton Mowbray has been working in partnership with Andy Nicholls and Rachel Heggs from the Melton Mowbray Play Close parkrun on an inclusive guide.

The inclusive guide includes photographs and communication symbols to help children and young people understand what happens at the Melton Mowbray Play Close Junior Parkrun and to encourage others to join the park run community.

Birch Wood School is committed to support local events and groups to become more inclusive. Sarah Wilson joined the parkrun with group of students, Fields, Molly and Amie and their families to present the guide to Andy and Rachel.

One of the students from Birch Wood School Mum had this to say about the guide and the parkrun.

Junior park run is a great friendly weekly event. There is no pressure to run, you can run, jog or walk and there are friendly volunteers at different check points on the course and there are tail walkers at the back so no one is last to finish. Aimee did run a few years ago and the other week was invited to run with Molly and Fields whilst we were there with her brothers. She thoroughly enjoyed herself and was so proud of herself when she finished that she did not stop talking about it for the next 2 days. The sense of achievement of completing made Aimee’s day and she is now trying to go a little faster to get a PB (personal best) on the results page!!

Andy has been so helpful especially in allowing and organising for Aimee to run as park run is normally up to 14 years
